Building History: Built in the 1980’s by the Susquehanna Humane Society, the back building at True Friends served as the main shelter. The building presently houses at least 20 dogs at one time.
In the summer of 2011 when True Friends took over, the building was in very bad shape including frequent flooding, mold, and inadequate lighting. In the beginning of our adventure our priority was raising enough financial support just to keep our doors open. Unfortunately, doing any needed renovations on the back building couldn’t be a priority. At one time, we actually considered not even using the space, but we quickly discovered there was too many homeless dogs that needed us. We had no other choice but to use the old kennels to provide shelter, safety, food, and warmth to these helpless souls.
Over the past 5 years we did what we could to improve the old, damp building. It took a lot of elbow grease, but we made significant improvements with the little extra funding we had. Hard work and a vision for a brighter future for an old animal shelter gave us incentive and hope. We were also able to fix the flooding and mold issues through the generosity of our very dedicated supporters.
The building has come along way, but we have quite the way to go. At this time, we are hopeful that a united community will come together and help us raise the funds to turn our vision into a reality.
The biggest need right now is new kennels. The existing kennels are rusted, broken, and a dangerous hazard to our dogs, employees, and volunteers. We do continue to use them because we cannot find it in our hearts to turn down the many desperate dogs that the old kennels make room for. Our True Friends family dreams of modern kennels that will keep our dogs not only comfortable and secure, but give them the quiet space some of them who often come in old, sick and scared could really use. Our plans also include a maternity area, isolation area, and a socialization area for potential adopters and volunteers.
Please consider making a donation specifically to our Back Building Fund and play a part in giving our much deserving dogs a better environment providing them with fresh air, sunlight, and hope for a brighter future.
